City boy, Swiss boy

What happens when an exchange student who loves the city and the heat lands in Switzerland? Well… everything you think you know might change.
Switzerland.
Switzerland.

I am a city boy: I dream of cities like London or New York. I love hot weather: Ecuador would be my perfect fit. Regarding food, you'll never see me craving chocolate, cheese just isn't my thing and I drink skimmed milk because it tastes the least like milk.

Everyone would think that Switzerland just isn't for me. Oops, I don't even wear a watch! However, despite my initial doubts and reservations, my experience as an exchange student at the Università della Svizzera Italiana has been nothing short of amazing.

And I like to explain the reason why using quantifiable data, numbers: just the way the Swiss would do it. Have you ever heard about the Economic Complexity Index? Well, if you haven't, let me explain. Take the example of Qatar: its economic complexity is insignificant, because the only industry they get their money from is the petroleum sector. Now, take that in contrast to Switzerland: this is the top country in the world when it comes to economic diversity.

Indeed, one could find the very best of everything just here. Do you like finance? You have 243 different banks to choose from. Do you prefer mechanics? The best watches are created here, with the highest degree of precision one could ever imagine. Are you into trains? Switzerland is a train heaven. Is nature your thing? You will find every kind of landscape here: from the subtropical weather in Lugano, to the alpine forests covered in snow. Are you into international relations? Geneva hosts the most important institutions of the world. Do you like politics? Switzerland is the only place where you can see a working example of direct democracy that has taken the country to where it is right now.

Even as small as it is, Switzerland is truly the most diverse country one could dream to find. This is why Switzerland can appeal to everyone: no matter who you are, there's always something for you.

But it's not just the diversity that makes Switzerland special: it's also the quality of life. The country is incredibly clean and organised, with efficient public transportation and a strong emphasis on recycling and sustainability. The healthcare system is top-notch, and the education system is amongst the best in the world. The crime rate is low, and the people are efficient, punctual, trustworthy, respectful and welcoming.

Living in Lugano, I experienced the best of both worlds. The town is small and quaint, but also cosmopolitan, with a diverse population and a thriving student community. The scenery is breathtaking, with the beautiful Lake Lugano and the surrounding mountains. The weather is mild, and the palm trees make it feel like 'Paradiso': which is just one train station away.

I also had the opportunity to travel around Switzerland and was amazed by the different landscapes and cultures. From quaint mountain villages to bustling cities like Zurich and Geneva, every place has its unique charm. The food is delicious, and I've grown to appreciate the cheese, chocolate and milk that I once thought I would never like.

My experience as an exchange student in Switzerland has exceeded all my expectations and has ultimately become one of my favourite places in the world. Switzerland offers the best of everything: from diversity to quality of life, and it's a country that can appeal to anyone.

Take my case: I may be a city boy. I may be a warm-temperature boy. I may not even be a boy who loves watches. But above all, if I've learnt something here, it's that deep down in my heart, I'm a Swiss boy. Yes. Switzerland is probably the best country in the world.
