Autumn is here, and with it the falling of the leaves, the Starbucks pumpkin spice lattes, and the Twilight marathons that lowkey we all love (Hoa hoa hoa 🍂). And when the weather starts getting colder and gloomier, you already know Halloween is just around the corner.

Hi! I am Isabel and today I am going to give you some tips to decorate your house for Halloween, because who knows, maybe you are celebrating a Halloween party soon, you love decorating your house for the season, or maybe you are interested in winning the ESN Haunted House contest and are looking for some inspiration… Anything could be.

Autumn is here

1. Paper Bats & Spiders 🦇🕷️

Want to create a spine-chilling atmosphere without spending a fortune? Grab some black paper or even old cardboard boxes, and start cutting! You can make dozens of bat and spider cutouts to scatter across your walls, ceiling, and windows. The trick is to cluster them in groups – imagine a swarm of bats flying out of a dark corner! Bonus points if you hang them from the ceiling with a string for an extra 3D effect. It’s eerie, easy, and practically free!

2. Jar of Eyeballs 👁️👁️

Now, this is one for those who love grossing out their friends! You can make a creepy “jar of eyeballs” with simple ingredients you probably already have. Take an empty jar and fill it with peeled grapes or ping-pong balls painted to look like eyeballs. If you're feeling extra creative, use food colouring to add fake blood to the jar. Place it on the table, and watch your guests squirm when they realise what’s inside!

3. DIY Potion Bottles 🧪

Nothing screams “haunted house” like a few potion bottles! Old glass bottles, jam jars, or even soda bottles will do. Fill them with coloured water (just mix some food colouring and water), and add labels like “Witch’s Brew,” “Zombie Tonic”, or “Love Potion #13”. Arrange them on a shelf or windowsill, and you’ve got yourself a spooky potion display that could make any witch jealous. This little touch will add a mysterious vibe to your haunted hideout. 🕯️

4. Bloody Handprints 🩸

Channel your inner horror movie director with this easy yet terrifying decoration. Using red paint or food colouring, you can create bloody handprints on old white sheets, windows, or even mirrors. Just dip your hands in the paint and press them against the surface – voilà, instant horror scene! Hang the blood-streaked sheets over your windows or doorways to give your space a dramatic, haunted house look. It’s simple but oh-so-effective for scaring up some screams.

5. Spooky Silhouettes 🖤

Creating eerie shadows in your windows is one of the easiest ways to make your house look haunted from the outside. Cut out silhouettes of witches, zombies, or creepy animals from black construction paper, and tape them to the inside of your windows. When the lights are on, these figures will cast terrifying shadows that will surely spook anyone passing by. It’s an easy way to give your home that classic haunted house vibe.

6. Cardboard Tombstones ⚰️

Bring the graveyard to your living room with DIY tombstones made from cardboard. Cut the cardboard into classic tombstone shapes, paint them grey, and use a black marker to write spooky messages like “R.I.P.” or “Here Lies…” Prop them up along the walls or outside your door to create a creepy cemetery. The best part? They’re light, easy to move, and totally customisable. It’s a great way to set the scene for a hauntingly fun Halloween!

7. Creative Pumpkin Carving 🎃

Pumpkin carving is a Halloween classic, but who says you have to stick to the traditional jack-o'-lantern face? This year, try something different! Use cookie cutters or a drill to create simple, modern designs like stars, polka dots, or geometric patterns. You can even carve out small sections and place a candle inside for a soft, glowing effect. If carving isn’t your thing, try painting pumpkins instead! You can paint them spooky black, or ghostly white, or decorate them with glitter – all the fun with none of the mess. 🎨✨
