Over the years, hundreds of thousands of individuals have participated in Erasmus+ mobility programmes. What may begin as a semester abroad, a youth exchange, or a short-term training experience often grows into something far greater: a powerful network, a broadened mindset and ultimately, a clear pathway towards leadership.
The Erasmus journey is often described as life-changing, and rightfully so. But beyond personal transformation, it cultivates a generation equipped to lead, influence and redefine entire industries and fields.
From politics to music and innovation, Erasmus alumni continue to prove that mobility is not simply about studying abroad; it is about creating leaders who think and act beyond borders.
That's why I have made up my mind to touch upon some of the brightest examples of how Erasmus can take people and how it can shape powerful leaders. Probably, this article may serve you a pinch of motivation to take the risk and apply.
Politics & Leadership - Roberta Metsola
Before rising to become one of Europe’s most influential political figures, Roberta Metsola was part of the Erasmus generation. Her international academic journey helped shape a worldview grounded in collaboration, dialogue and unity.
She spent 6 months at the Université de Rennes in France during 2002–2003. She is considered the first European Parliament President from the #ErasmusGeneration.
Today, as President of the European Parliament, she represents millions and plays a central role in shaping Europe’s future. Her path highlights a core Erasmus principle: true leadership begins with the ability to understand and embrace diverse perspectives.
Music & Culture - Salvador Sobral
Eurovision Song Contest 2017 winner Salvador Sobral stands as a powerful example of how Erasmus nurtures creativity.
Salvador Sobral did his Erasmus mobility in Mallorca, Spain in 2011.He was studying psychology at the ISPA Institute in Lisbon before moving to Mallorca, where he continued his studies at the University of the Balearic Islands. While on Erasmus, he started singing in bars and hotels on the island, which helped push his musical career forward and eventually led him to leave his psychology studies. Following his time in Mallorca, he moved to Barcelona to study jazz at the Taller de Músics.
Through his experience abroad, he immersed himself in diverse musical traditions, which deeply influenced his artistic identity. His iconic performance was more than just music, it was a genuine expression of emotion and cultural richness that resonated across Europe.
Erasmus did more than educate him, it expanded his creative vision and gave his voice a global dimension.
Innovation & Design - Gorden Wagener
In the field of design and innovation, Gorden Wagener exemplifies forward-thinking leadership. As Chief Design Officer at Mercedes-Benz, he shapes the future of one of the world’s most iconic brands.
Gorden Wagener did his Erasmus mobility in London, where he spent almost a year studying at the Royal College of Art (RCA). He participated in the Erasmus+ programme during his studies, which he has cited as a crucial step for his career. At the Royal College of Art, he specialised in Transportation Design, which helped lead to roles at Volkswagen, Mazda and eventually Mercedes-Benz in 1997.
His international educational experience, including Erasmus mobility, contributed to developing a global design mindset. Today, his work merges technology, culture and emotion, redefining how people experience mobility.
His journey demonstrates that Erasmus is not just about gaining knowledge; it is about learning to think globally and create without limits.
These stories reflect different paths - politics, music, design- yet they are all connected by a shared foundation: an Erasmus experience that expanded their horizons and shaped their ambitions.
This is the true strength of the Erasmus generation. It does not produce one type of success; it cultivates leaders in every direction.
Erasmus+ is far more than a mobility programme. It is a catalyst that transforms curiosity into capability, and experience into leadership.
