Halloween in Transylvania (HiT), organised by ESN Romania, debuted in 2011. After its success, the event has been held annually, growing each year and becoming one of ESN Romania’s main events—a must for every international student coming to Romania for studies or internships. Last year, the number of participants reached around 900, with activities including a Horror Pyjama Party, Halloween Party, Dracula Express Treasure Hunt in Brașov, Flag Parade and visits to various castles in Transylvania.

We spoke with David Babeș, a member of this year’s HiT National Organising Committee, and learned more about this journey through the cultural heritage and mysterious lands of Transylvania.

Q: Where did the idea of HiT come from?

A: The idea of HiT, or ‘Halloween in Transylvania’, was born from the desire to offer Erasmus students a truly immersive and memorable cultural experience by celebrating Halloween in the legendary land of Dracula. The unique setting of Transylvania, with its rich history, local myths and stunning landscapes, made it the perfect backdrop for an event that combines fun, cultural exploration and international connection.

Q: How does ESN Romania promote Halloween and at the same time preserve local traditions among international students? What makes HiT different?

A: ESN Romania promotes Halloween through the HiT event by blending the fun of an internationally recognised celebration with the unique cultural heritage of Romania. They highlight local traditions, such as Romanian folklore and the legend of Dracula, through interactive tours, historical storytelling and immersive experiences at iconic sites like Transylvanian castles. What makes HiT different is its perfect mix of international Halloween excitement and authentic Romanian cultural exploration, offering Erasmus students a deeper understanding of local traditions while connecting with peers from all over the world in a truly unique setting.

Halloween in Transylvania is celebrated in the most authentic setting possible, right in the legendary homeland of Dracula. This unique location offers an ideal atmosphere for a spooky celebration, blending local legends with rich historical tales. Through interactive experiences and guided tours, participants gain a deeper understanding of Romanian culture and history, learning about local traditions, folklore and the fascinating past of Transylvania.

As they explore the stunning landscapes and hidden treasures of the region, from medieval castles to scenic mountains, the trip provides a rare opportunity to see some of Romania’s most beautiful and historically significant sites, making it an enriching and educational adventure.

Q:  What are the favourite activities of Erasmus students at HiT (based on previous editions)?

A: Surely, the most interesting activities for Erasmus students are the themed Halloween parties. It’s the perfect moment for them to showcase their creativity and originality through the best costumes or makeup. Every year, students surprise us with new ideas, and in recent editions, the best costumes even received an award. Every Erasmus student wants to have fun, and the fact that these parties feature traditional music from various countries as well as well-known international hits creates the perfect atmosphere for a party that feels like a real festival.

Q: What does HiT 2024 bring compared to previous editions?

This year, a new castle joins the list of tourist attractions to be visited: Cantacuzino Castle in Bușteni. In the past two years, this castle has become better known as Nevermore Academy from the famous “Wednesday” series. Much of the first season was filmed here, making Cantacuzino Castle the perfect choice for this Halloween season.

Additionally, HiT 2024 enjoys new partnerships this year, which will enhance the classic welcome pack for participants and bring more surprise prizes for various competitions, such as Pumpkin Carving, Best Horror Costume and the top team in Dracula Express— a treasure hunt dedicated to discovering Brașov.

Q: How do you think this event impacts the experience of an Erasmus student in Romania?

A: Personally, I think that ‘Halloween in Transylvania’ significantly enriches the Erasmus experience by offering students a unique opportunity to connect with both Romanian culture and peers from around the world. Not only do participants get to celebrate Halloween in the authentic and legendary setting of Transylvania, but they also immerse themselves in the region's rich history and folklore through guided tours and local interactions.

This event brings together international students from various countries, creating a diverse cultural exchange. It also allows them to meet locals and experience Romania’s traditions first-hand, fostering a deeper connection to the country. The event's mix of adventure, learning and social bonding makes it a highlight of the Erasmus journey, turning it into an unforgettable experience that combines fun with meaningful cultural discovery.
